The sky really is the limit when it comes to creating a gallery wall. Oftentimes people include pictures, paintings, sketches, drawings by family members, or even mementos that you may have kept that have great meaning to you! Whatever it may be, look for something to tie it all together—it could be theme, color, similar photographs, similar frames, or items that have a connection to you personally.
The first thing to do is lay these items all out and look for how they might best fit the space you want them to hang. You may have to eliminate a few items so keep working with it until you have it narrowed down. It’s OK to take your time visualizing things by reworking the placement. Keep adding and taking out things around your house until you find the perfect collection.
My favorite trick is to get some brown paper (you may find rolls of it from craft stores such as Michael’s) and trace each item. Cut out the exact paper trace and hang them on the wall with painter’s tape to mimic how you would like to hang them. Mark a small space on the brown paper with where the nail should go and nail it right through the paper! Once you have done that with each item, you should be able to pull off the brown paper and hang your items.
This is the method I used when creating this gallery wall for my friend, Pattie. She had just moved into a new home and had collected many pictures and art from family over the years. We also found things to include in the gallery wall that meant something to her and gave the wall color and character! Viola!
