Transforming a room for a new stage of life is fun and exciting but can be daunting too. This empty-nest parent wanted her newly married son to feel like it was still his room when he visits home, but also a welcoming place for his spouse too!
When redesigning a space for a newly married couple, it’s important to consider a few things.
- What is a realistic budget without “breaking the bank” (especially if you just pitched in for the wedding!)?
- What furniture do you want to keep or repurpose for the room?
- What color or style does the new bride or groom and their spouse like?
- What decorative items or furniture may be incorporated to make the room feel like it represents them individually and as a couple?
- What could be the focal point that ties the room together?
Originally, this room was a very dark colored room which incorporated skiing and snowboarding elements.
Now, it is a room that is lighter and includes pictures of things that are important to the couple (their engagement photos, a photo of the son’s wife and her family, and photos of the two of them at this house). The bride loves lots of color, textures, and comfy furniture.
Because the room has lots of interesting architecture with the double hung windows…we decided to divide the room in two complimentary colors with chair rail dividing the room. Then I found a duvet cover that had an interesting texture and color to tie the room together and added several pillows with various patterns for a fun dimension.
The bed, end tables, and dresser were repurposed from the original room, but a comfy round sofa was added because, well, there was room for it! It was the perfect addition and now provides a space to curl up and read a book. A desk was added since the bride and groom are freelancers and may need a place to work when they come home. Another way to make the bride feel like it is her room too was to include her work as a photographer in a framed piece from her very first magazine shoot!
Redecorating can be stressful especially when you are trying to make not only your child happy with the room but, now their spouse too! As my husband would say, ”it really is another guest bedroom when your child leaves home and moves away!” True—but that doesn’t mean that their room can’t feel like a welcome oasis when they come back to visit.
