Planning a Backyard Oasis: Where To Start?

My first step when deciding how to design an outdoor area is to ask clients “What do you want to actually do in that space?” Do you want to use it to spend time reading a book, hanging with family and friends, or throwing a big party? This will help determine the flow of the space.

Since this is my personal home, here are some things that were important to me:

  • Sunbathe
  • Gather around a fire pit (for hosting small gatherings)
  • Playground for grandkids
  • Volleyball/badminton net (for hosting larger crowds)
  • Have cozy area for reading a book
  • Bar and/or grilling area to hang with friends

Another important question is “What type of plants do you like and what are you realistically able to grow in your space?” Ask yourself the questions below to help you rule in/rule out specific foliage.

  • Is there irrigation?
  • How much time can you commit to watering and pruning?
  • What would you like to see bloom and different times of the year?
  • What color would you like to see featured in your space?

Lastly, what do you want the space to look like now and in the future?

  • To serve for a growing family?
  • To serve a party every month or maybe once in a while?
  • To be a space for just you and your love of gardening, reading, etc.

These were all questions I asked myself when designing this backyard that has been growing for over 20 years! Here’s what it looks like in the late summer/early fall months.

Hosting tip for fall: Always have temperature-regulating options for your guests. Because it gets quite cold at night, I like to have throw blankets draped over chairs or have a firepit going so guests can feel cozy and comfortable.

Hosting tip for any time of year: I like to always have fresh herbs growing. Some of my favorites are basil, rosemary, and thyme! Adding a garnish from your own garden is a quick way to elevate any dish that you’re serving for your guests.
